The US midterms are tomorrow

HAIKU

I want to coach women in politics, especially women of colour.

In the last couple of weeks we've had municipal elections and a provincial election in BC. There’s also the midterms coming up in the US tomorrow.

I care about democracy and admire people who step up to serve in politics.

Coaching can be helpful because:

  • It’s confidential. You get a confidential space to think out loud about your thoughts and feelings.
  • You get to think about your values and your life’s purpose. You can then use these tools to navigate your political career.
  • You get both a cheerleader and an accountability buddy as you step into a new phase of your leadership.

If you’re heading into a political role or starting a new one (or want to inquire on behalf of someone on your team) reach out.

Can I partner with you and your workplace?

Several people have reached out as they're in budget planning mode for next year.

Reach out if your workplace needs:

  • 1:1 leadership coaching
  • team leadership development work
  • inclusion strategy
  • offsite design and facilitation

If you don't know what you need, I can help you articulate what problem you're trying to solve and how we might do that together.

Awarding failure

Yesterday I learned about Etsy's three armed sweater award.

It is given to the person who failed in the most spectacular way. The winner not only gets an actual three arm sweater, but also gets to stand up, in front of the whole company, and talk about all the context around the fail, and what was learned from it.

A lot of teams say it's safe to fail, but this suggests to me that Etsy actually means it.

One of my biggest work failures was when I took down the entire National Library of New Zealand website, not once, but twice! To my credit, the second time I broke it in a different way than the first. In the moment I thought I was going to throw up and hoped the earth would swallow me up. 20 years later I can see that nothing that bad really happened.

What's one of your work failures? What did you learn?

Coaching

I've been offering one-off 30 minute coaching sessions and a few people have used them as confidential dream incubators. People dream out loud about the business they've been thinking about for years. People dream out loud about changes they want to make to their relationships, health, money, or careers. People dream out loud about the audacious thing that keeps waking them up in the middle of the night.

Do you have a dream you're ready to speak out loud? Reach out.

People have also used these sessions to start to process their feelings about being laid off, to get another perspective on a tough decision or to build in accountability on something important that they keep avoiding.

I'm offering 8 of these sessions in November, there are 3 left. Each session is 30 minutes and costs $20.

Sam Bradd's visual recording

Sam Bradd is a graphic facilitator, meeting facilitator, author and teacher. He generously shares some of his templates. What, So What, Now What is simple and powerful tool and I've used it in many scenarios. This beautiful template is new to me and I intend to use it the next time I use this Liberating Structure.

Sam has announced his 2027 teaching dates and the April in person workshop has already sold out.
