What's the most important thing for you right now?

It's been a time of shifting priorities over here.

At the start of last week, my wife's top priority was a big town hall presentation for work. Priorities quickly shifted to getting her 90-year-old aunt care and being her medical advocate.

At the start of this week I chose to cancel a big trip to Toronto so that I could be here to support my wife in her support role. This honours my value of family.

I'm grateful we both have work that gives us the flexibility to show up in our care roles. It's been exhausting driving to the hospital to visit and advocate for her. There's been a lot of waiting to get updates from medical staff and forgetting to eat. The air in the hospital feels different than other places. Her aunt is now well supported and cared for in hospice.

I picked up a brochure about hospice care and this sentence shook me:

Hospice care accepts death as unavoidable, respects the clients' right to die with grace and dignity, and seeks to neither speed up or extend a client's dying process.

Accepting that death is unavoidable. It is a human right to die, with grace and dignity. We are here to support death at the speed that it happens. All of this is so human. It feels basic but also sacred.

Having our to do lists upturned was disorienting and it's making me think some meta thoughts about what's really important and using my values was a way to help us make big and small decisions along the way.

Coaching

I want to help you get really clear about what's important to you for the rest of the year.

I know many people are unhappy in their current jobs and feel stuck because the labor market is tight. I also know that people are sitting on big ideas afraid to take the first step. There continue to be layoffs in many industries and people are simultaneously feeling grief and seeing an opportunity for themselves that didn't exist before. How do we navigate work and life in late stage capitalism?

I'm offering 8 of these one time 30-minute sessions each month.

Some ideas of what we might coach on:

  • your priorities vs your work priorities
  • feeling stuck in your current role
  • embodying confidence that is authentic to you
  • dreaming big about the project or company you keep putting off starting
  • setting or honouring your boundaries

What this session isn't:

  • me telling you what to do

Why am I charging $20? Why isn't this free?

In the summer I did an experiment offering $10 coaching sessions with people who are unemployed and looking for work. I learned that we all valued the sessions more and people showed up ready to go. I have a value around honouring the labour and impact of work, so this is also values aligned for me.

I'm here to work with people who are ready to get unstuck, see things from a different perspective or to tap into their courage and do the hard thing. LFG!

...Haiku

Spilata is new to me and the first time I heard this song I listened to it about 27 times in a row. It's so joyful and creative. I love his attitude, brilliance and fashion.

For coaches

Coaches' BBQ is coming up on October 23! This will be the 6th time we're hosting this free, online event.

Expect a self-led, attendee-directed experience where folks can lead coaching segments they’re most interested in, or join in the convo with their spell books open. Just like at other neighborhood haunts, these conversations could run for 45-minutes or might be just a ten-minute catch-up.

Past participants have said it was fun, that it felt like an inclusive event where they belonged and they learned something. One of our goals is for this to be a place for new coaches to lead their first workshop or host their first thing. If you want to chat about that, reply to this email and start a convo with me.

Costumes optional, good conversation mandatory.

Other ways to work with me

  • 1:1 coaching — 3 or 6 month packages. Book a free chemistry call to see if we're a fit. Your workplace might have professional development funds you can use, or you might ask your manager to invest in you.
  • Team offsites — I design and facilitate in-person experiences for teams. I'm actively looking to do more of this, especially in person. Reply with the basics (who, what, when) and let's talk.
  • Speaking — keynotes, panels, fireside chats. I'm a strong interviewer if you need someone to draw out a great conversation. Here's my current keynote on leadership and values.
  • Inclusion consulting — strategy, thought partnership, and culture work for organizations building high-performance inclusive workplaces. Reach out here.
